Leading in Messy Times - a UNGA 79 Event

Tuesday, September 24th, 5:00-7:00pm

BTS, Empire State Building (50th floor), NYC

Streamed online 5:30-6:30 USA EST via btsspark.info/UNGA79

Join us as we share our insights from coaching over 20,000 education leaders and an expert panel discusses how to lead in messy times. We will reveal the challenges that leaders are facing, explore the characteristics we believe leaders will need to thrive and unpack the M-E-S-S-Y leadership model.

We are in messy times. We are in the midst of what has been deemed VUCA when things are becoming more volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. From the recent pandemic to population migration and unpredictable politics to the emergence of artificial intelligence, these raise challenges for those in education, those leading our schools, and those leading our communities. The world is changing.

One thing that has yet to change dramatically is how we lead.

It is time for us to reconsider what effective leadership is for these new times. The old ‘captain of the ship’ may no longer be effective nor efficient. Rather it may be time for a new form of leader – one who empowers others; deals calmly with volatility and uncertainty; is adaptive in the face of complexity; and creates shared purpose in ambiguity.

At the end of the session, attendees will receive a copy of the book Embracing MESSY Leadership, a joint publication from ASCD & BTS Spark, and have the opportunity to chat with the authors.
